Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS)
formerly known as “preleukemia”.
Myelodysplastic Syndromes are a diverse collection of hematological conditions united by mueloid lineage dysplasia or ineffective production of myeloid blood cells.
This myeloid lineage dysplasia places an individual at risk of developing acute myelogenous leukemia.
Includes several subcategories with very different findings and different prognoses .
The common element in all of the myelodysplasias is anaemia, usually refractory , meaning that treatments other than blood transfusions are often not helpful.
