Caput succedaneum

 

  • mild inflammation, edema, and hematoma over scalp of occipital region
  • etiology: drawing of this region of the infant skull into the presenting portion of the cervical os at amniotic sac rupture
  • negative pressure created results in distention of capillaries with extravasation of blood and fluid locally
  • This presentation resolves within the first 24hrs of life.
