Critical Limb Ischemia

A severe obstruction of the arteries, significantly impairing the blood flow to the extremities (hands, feet and legs) preventing sufficient gas exchange, nutrient delivery and waste removal at the tissues to meet minimal metabolic demands. This results in ischemia (oxygen starvation of the affected tissues) and progresses to the point of severe pain and skin ulcers or sores with impaired healing capability.

Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI) is often present in individuals with severe peripheral arterial disease (PAD).
