Romberg’s Sign

 

Inability to maintain balance in the standing position with feet and legs drawn together and eyes closed.

Appilcation:

Test for neurological functioning – a test of the body’s sense of positioning (proprioception), which requires healthy functioning of the dorsal columns of the spinal cord.

Musculoskeletal assessment – muscle strength and coordination.

Used by the police force to test for alcohol intoxication (drunk driving test).

Manifestations:

A positive test results in swaying or falling as the individual attempts standing with feet and legs drawn together and eyes closed.
