Retrolental fibroplasia or Retinopathy of prematurity

an eye disease that affects prematurely born infants.

Etiology:

Poorly disorganized growth of retinal blood vessels nourishing the retinal dendrites.

may result in scarring and retinal detachment.

condition can be mild or in severe cases may lead to blindness

All preterm neonates are at risk for the condition, and very low birth weight is an additional risk factor.

Both oxygen toxicity and relative hypoxia can contribute to the development of retinopathy of prematurity.
