Nuclear Medicine Gastric Emptying Study

A Study to evaluates the emptying of food. A radioactive tracer chemical measures the speed with which food empties from the stomach and enters the small intestines.

This test is used to assess and diagnose delayed gastric emptying.

Gastric Delay Etiology:

  1.  gastric outlet obstruction
  2. gastroparesis

Gastric Delay Manifestations

  1. abdominal discomfort after meals
  2. nausea
  3. vomiting.

Patient Procedure Preparation

The patient must have nothing to eat or drink for at least 4 hours prior to the test.

Exam Procedure

The patient will be asked to eat an egg sandwich containing a radioactive tracer, typically comprised of one egg and one slice of dry toast. Images will be taken immediately following the consumption of the sandwich, and continue for up to 2 hours.
