Autonomic dysreflexia

A condition resulting from the blocked function of the autonomic nervous system that occurs in individuals with paralysis. 

It is an exaggerated response of the nervous system to a specific trigger, such as an overfull bladder, that occurs because the brain is no longer able to control the body’s response to the trigger.

  

Etiology:

  1. spinal cord damage above T6.
  2.  caused by simultaneous sympathetic and parasympathetic activity

 

Manifestations:

  • a pounding headache
  • blotchy or red skin rash
  • sweating
  • Bradycardia
  • Hypertension
